Another reason is the social aspect of bubble tea. Many people enjoy going to bubble tea shops with friends or colleagues, as it provides a fun and casual atmosphere to hang out and chat. Some shops even offer board games or other activities to encourage customers to stay longer.
With the rise in demand for bubble tea, local businesses are taking notice and responding accordingly. Many cafes and shops have opened up in recent years, each with their own unique twists on the classic drink.
One popular chain is Chatime, which originated in Taiwan and now has multiple locations throughout Indonesia. They offer a wide range of flavors and toppings, as well as customizable sweetness and ice levels to suit individual preferences.
Another popular option is Kokumi, which is Indonesian-owned and specializes in unique drinks such as taro latte and strawberry lattes with cheesecake bits.
Some cafes, such as Say Something and Share Tea, have also gotten creative with their presentation, offering drinks in mason jars or mini-milking buckets, or adding edible flowers or cotton candy to the mix.
Despite the growth in competition, many of these businesses are thriving. Customers continue to flock to their favorite bubble tea shops, eager to try new flavors and combinations, and to share their experiences on social media.
Some customers even go as far as to consider themselves “bubble tea connoisseurs,” with a deep passion and knowledge for all things boba-related.
“I’ve tried almost every flavor and topping combination out there,” says 22-year-old university student Nadia. “Bubble tea is just so addictive and fun to drink, and I love trying new places and seeing how they put their own spin on it.”
While some may dismiss bubble tea as just a passing fad, it’s clear that the craze shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As more and more businesses enter the market, the options for Indonesian bubble tea lovers only continue to expand.
